Freshlyground, founded in Cape Town in 2002, are one of the great bands of modern South Africa: Afropop, soul, jazz, indie rock, traditional African sounds, many rhythms, many colours, life in full blaze. With «Doo Be Doo» and «I’d Like» they became famous; with Shakira and «Waka Waka» they hit the world stage in 2010. For years, Zolani Mahola was the voice at the front; now Mbali Makhoba is on board. She is strong, soulful, from Imizamo Yethu near Cape Town, and says: «Music is my way of telling where I come from – and where we are going next». The new album «Take Me Home» sounds bluesier, deeper, even more grown-up than its predecessors. Freshlyground have reset their sails.
